Why do they bring brooms? And why, later, does Ishmael set out on his own? They brought brooms, so they can sweep away their footsteps on the road, so no one knew where they hide. Ishmael went on his own because he wanted to find peace somewhere else, and Kaloko decided to stay because he was afraid to leave the swamp.

And who are the six boys Ishmael encounters after wandering and surviving in the forest on his own for more than a month? Ishmael saud that the most difficult part of being in a forest is the loneliness. The six boys he met while he was in the forest was his schoolmates. What do we learn in Ch. How does Saidu die? Who is Gasemu? Why does Ishmael befriend him and then later try to strangle him? At the village of Yele, a pivotal shift in this memoir begins when Ishmael goes from being an observer and victim of savage, war-triggered violelece to being both of these things as well as a perpetrator of such violence.

How does this shift happen? Do Ishmael and his companions have any choice in making it? The boy soldiers are given white tablets by their army superiors. Because Junior and Ishmael's parents were separated and they lacked a mother at home, they were treated as misfits and pitied by the local community. The feeling of being an outsider without a true place returns to Ishmael during their three months in Kamator. The flashback also serves to reinforce the bond that existed between Ishmael and his brother before they were torn apart by the war.
