Now, I'm 42, and that shit pisses me off. A post shared by Katherine Heigl katherineheigl. I'm not going to lie, I remember falling onto the 'I don't like Katherine Heigl' bandwagon without knowing why I didn't like Katherine Heigl. In fact, I actually did like her but every magazine I picked up told me not to. I had no idea that a lot of it had to do with her questioning her role in Knocked Up, which I'm not particularly a fan.
But wven if she did have notions or was a bit of a diva, did that really entitle everyone to constantly bad mouth her? When Caroline Flack tragically passed away, we all said wasn't it awful how the tabloids treated her. When it turned out Britney Spears had no freedom we all backtracked on how much we mocked her mental breakdown in When it turned out Paris Hilton had suffered years of abuse as a teenager, suddenly she wasn't the 'tramp' from the sex tape anymore, but a victim and an inspiration.
If looking deeper into why Heigl was blacklisted should tell us anything it's that maybe we shouldn't be so quick to hate women just because we're told to. The BetterMaternityCare campaign are planning to march! Check out our exclusive interview with Linda Kelly from Women Ascend here. Melissa Carton.
When Rogen was asked about it in , he said his trust felt "somewhat betrayed" after reading her comments. Somebody with an opinion that you don't like? Now, I'm 42, and that shit pisses me off. I had no tools.
And so when that happens, as someone who is an egomaniac, I just get hurt by that," he admitted in Deborah Coughlin, author of Outspoken: 50 Speeches by Incredible Women, says: "Most people are too scared of being thought of as a troublemaker to say what they really think about the company they work for, their boss, or their conditions. For women, and women of colour, non-binary people and other marginalised groups, the risk is greater because you already are less likely to get the job, more likely to be paid less for the job, and will be the first one out.
She adds the expectation on most people in most industries is to "shut up and be grateful for what you've got".
In the years since Heigl and Rogen's public fall-out, the place and treatment of women in the entertainment industry has been re-evaluated amid the MeToo movement. So much so that Heigl's husband Josh Kelley believes "she'd be a hero" if history repeated itself today.
Despite the intense pressure put upon Heigl by the response to her comments, her attitude appears to have grown in strength. She told the Washington Post that standing up for her ideals "doesn't make me less of a feminine, loving, nurturing woman to be ambitious and have big dreams and big goals.
Over a decade on, she is now set to front a new Netflix show, Firefly Lane. Maybe, but I'm not sure MeToo showed women that it isn't risky to speak out, it just showed women there are occasions when the risk is worth it," says Coughlin. We should make it as easy as possible for people to admit mistakes and change their minds. Heigl's journey is similar to that of Hubert, who, decades after leaving Fresh Prince, recently got the opportunity to make her voice heard.
Like Heigl, she faced the anger of a co-star, Will Smith, then aged 21, and a balance of power stacked against her. She's mad now, but she's been mad all along.
On March 11, , Heigl reportedly did not show up for work on the show, and Rhimes reached an agreement to immediately release Heigl from her contract. It was abrupt, as viewers had already watched her final episode without even realising it. I carry that with me a lot. It has served me well. In , in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she referenced the movie star when talking about her new show, Scandal, saying "there are no Heigls" on set.
To say Heigl's career has never recovered since her departure from Grey's is an understatement. It was a commercial success, but it received harsh reviews. Two years after she left Grey's, Heigl said she asked the producers if she could return to finish Izzie's storyline. She was always floundering, you know, and so she was always one step behind the eight ball and I want to see that girl take some power back.
You miss it. I miss my friends. It was a great work environment … and it becomes a family.
