The Grizzlies moniker lasted just two years. The centuries-old Dutch reference stuck, and soon enough live bears stalked the sideline at Bruins games in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. UCLA finally had a mascot of its own, but the team still had a to share a home field. Each time the two teams met during those years, they both proudly wore their home jerseys as a way to claim ownership of Los Angeles.

An NCAA rule change put the kibosh on that tradition , as away teams were required to wear white jerseys, but in the two teams staged a protest.

UCLA immediately took a timeout to compensate, and by the next season, the rule had changed. However, wild animals became increasingly difficult to handle in a large crowd, and the Coliseum outlawed their appearances.

Only six months of age during the football season, this first official "Little Joe" was a Himalayan bear cub from India. However, after a short time he grew too large and was transferred to a circus. The first "Josephine" arrived in , after a long search to fill "Little Joe Bruin's" place. She was purchased by the alumni, and was kept in the backyard of the Rally Committee chairman.

She also grew too large and was soon moved to the San Diego Zoo. The difficulty in obtaining and caring for live bears eventually led to the appearance of costumed student mascots. In the mid's several male students were selected to take turns playing the part of Joe Bruin. The various versions of the duo have been a fixture on the UCLA sporting scene ever since that time. The pound bell originally hung atop a Southern Pacific freight locomotive.

Is that where Bruins comes from? Well, no. Some names come from school songs. Maybe "bruin" fit better in the song than "bear. Other schools use Bruins as mascots too.

You don't say. The school is built on an antebellum estate that had a large zoo with lots of bears. So why not Bears? Can't really say.
