Sommering cited reports of decapitated heads that have ground their teeth and that the face of one decapitated person "grimaced horribly" when a physician inspecting the head poked the spinal canal with his finger [source: Sommering ]. Perhaps most famously was the study conducted by a Dr. Beaurieux in of the head of executed criminal Henri Languille.
Over the course of 25 to 30 seconds of observation, the physician recorded managing to get Languille to open his eyes and "undeniably" focus them on the doctor's twice by calling the executed man's name [source: Bellows ]. October 31, April 8, Accessed March 17, When a human is decapitated, it severs the spinal cord, and there's no way any human could survive that kind of decapitation Controversial surgeon Dr. Sergio Canavero of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group in Italy has proposed the idea for a head transplant for patients whose muscles and nerves have degenerated, fusing their sound mind with an equally sound body.
He's proposed the procedure based on an extremely complex technique. Anne Boleyn , for example, apparently tried to speak after being beheaded. But are these stories bogus or is there scientific evidence that the head can remain conscious after it has been separated from the body that sustains it? In recent years there has been significant interest in what has been called the world's first potential human head transplant.
If it were to go ahead — and that is increasingly unlikely — the transplant would push multiple boundaries of science. The most obvious one being how long and whether the head and its contents might survive following removal from its original body. The brain and all the structures it supplies need oxygen to function the brain accounts for 20 percent of all oxygen used in the body.
Once the blood vessels in the neck are severed, the oxygen supply is halted. Whatever oxygen remains in the blood and tissues after the fatal blow would certainly be there for use, but it wouldn't last long. Although most people see beheading as a historical event that happened to troubled queens or indignant revolutionaries, it remains a current event in some parts of the world. Register or Log In.
