How long do macarons last

Perhaps if you want to enjoy some of the finest and delicious macarons, then now you know where to go. They are known for their round and crispy biscuit-like appearance and the biscuits are usually filled with soft and smooth filling like a sandwich. There are other varieties in which baked macarons are dipped in chocolate melts or drizzled with colorful sprinkles etc. To make these delicious treats, you would need some basic ingredients for its dough like the Almond meal, egg whites and sugar.

Besides these ingredients a number of others can be added to make the end result more delightful. The macarons which most of my readers are likely familiar with are usually the colored ones. They are known as Parisian Macarons. They are not only tempting to the eyes, but they also adorn the dinner tables well with their refreshing colors. You can add different essences to match the color, like lemon juice to the yellow ones, orange juice to the orange ones, vanilla essence to the white ones, cocoa powder to the brown ones and so on and so forth.

They are completely different in taste and texture. Keep this difference in mind while you look for the macaron recipe. Lets time-travel to when the macarons were first created. It was those chefs who first time created this recipe using their traditional ingredients. It was not until that they gained popularity in the whole of France.

There were two nuns who were seeking asylum during the French revolution; they baked the treats themselves and started selling on the streets to make a living.

Initially, they used nothing but almond ground, sugar, and egg whites and baked plain biscuits without any filling. The macarons that we now see today were first created in the early 20 th century. Pierre Desfontaines of Patisserie Laduree in France was the first to sandwich the macaron shells and add a buttercream or jam as a filling between them. This filling is also known as the flavored Ganache.

Macarons should be refrigerated for optimal taste and consumed within 3 days. After this period, it is important that you are aware that the macarons will last a maximum of 7 days.

Do not leave them in an open container when using a refrigerator. Beyond this, freezing is an option for up to 6 months. I have to admit the answer to this question lies how well you store them. We know all bakery items can lose their form and taste over time. Macaron shells can stay frozen for up to one month without affecting the freshness or quality.

The quality starts to decline a bit after that with reduction in flavor intensity, slight changes in flavor profile and freezer burn etc. The one month mark is a good place to start for a best before date and some sources vouch for storing macarons in the freezer for up to 3 months.

For fully assembled macarons, the length of time will fall within these parameters depending on the filling that is used. How the macaron is stored will also affect its longevity. Macarons stay nice and fresh in the fridge or in the freezer when stored in air-tight containers. They can usually be stacked one on top of another in the container. If the bottom of your macarons are a bit gummy or sticky, I recommend placing a piece of plastic wrap or parchment paper in between each layer.

Better yet, I recommend putting one single layer by itself in a shallow BPA-free tupperware container. These containers are usually made for storing pasta sheets or sandwiches. And because they are shallow, they are also great for storing decorated macarons face up without compromising the design.

I purchased mine from a Japanese home goods store but I was able to find comparable ones here , I like that these are even bigger at 12X8. Once the macarons are ready to be assembled, decorated or served, take them out of the freezer and place them in the fridge to thaw for a few hours.

My readers mentioned in the comments below to keep them in the original container. Once they are completely thawed, they will last days more depending on the filling used. Most decorations that have been applied onto a macaron can be frozen and thawed with no problems. When in doubt, always test run one decorated macaron by freezing and thawing it and see how it holds up.

Below are some decorations and how they hold up after freezing: - Edible marker: good, try to keep them face up in shallow containers, one level per tray as they do get smudged when rubbed. If this happens, it can usually be cleaned off with a wet paper tower if the color is light enough. Storing your macarons in the fridge is the best way to keep them fresh.

You can store your macarons in the fridge for up to 7 weeks and they will still taste fresh and none of the ingredients will have gone off or taste different. Even though you can store your macarons at ambient temperature, storing your macarons in the fridge does keep them fresher. However be sure to take the macaroons out of the fridge at least 20 minutes before you are due to serve them, but keeping them in their plastic container, just to ensure that they reach room temperature and are the perfect texture and temperature for your guests or for yourself when you come to eat them or serve them.

The other way that macarons can be stored is by freezing them. However this should only really be done once they have been cooked and filled and are fresh out of the oven. Re freezing macarons is not something that should be recommended as the texture could change and it might not taste as nice once it has been re frozen. At Miss Macaroon we have some top tips for you when it comes to storing your macarons and keeping them as fresh as possible for a long as possible.

Secondly, whilst they definitely will be fine at ambient temperature, it is probably best to just pop them in the fridge because the moisture in the fridge may keep the texture better than being left out in the air. Again, the best way to keep them in the fridge is in their plastic containers.
