Pornography, adult, or mature content. Excessive profanity. Excessive hostility. A couple of things: I cannot stand the Lv99 content nor the change in pace after WotG, personally.

I'd prefer something akin to what I grew up playing. My son has thoroughly beaten all the souls series, nioh, etc. I am not using that as some litmus for skill nor elitism, but he, like me, is fine with a game that has challenge and slow pacing. The retail version of the game, with all current expansions has definitely made levelling and early gearing less grindy, but really the relaxing duo of levelling is what we're looking for here.

This is where a private server would serve us for a number of reasons. We may not play often enough to justify two accounts monthly service. Some private servers have other types of QoL adjustments that are geared for this very play-style. I am unaware of just how dead retail servers are so this final point may be moot. Thank you for your input. Thank you so much for this info. The free trials still floating around is awesome. A new installer that's easier and less prone to fail is wonderful.

So glad this got an update. I don't think youmg people today would even be interested in playing current FFXI. Also, does the ToS still say a minimum age of 13 for players? Exactly why I'd love to find an easy way to jump into the action and check to see if he enjoys it enough to pursue further or long term.

He is 13, whether he'll enjoy the game and its quirkiness is something I'd love to test. I have an itch to play it a bit and I know an old friend would jump on as well if we decided to play long term. With 18 years of content, dozens of different storylines, some of which overlap, and not any really good indicator of which events are supposed to happen in which order. In addition, memories of FFXI as it was in its early days may put off players who want to experience the story, but do not want to go through the incredibly long and slow process that leveling to 75 used to be.

When attempting to fix this, Square Enix added many features that did in fact make the process of leveling to 99 more 'painless', but they also add another layer of complexity for a player who is returning to Vana'Diel or experiencing it for the first time. On top of that, the systems strip the world, especially the lower level zones, of their populations, as well as removing the requirement that you join other players to take on content.

That is why I created Syldra, a progression server with the goal of giving everyone the opportunity to experience the storyline and content of FFXI in the order that it was released, though on an accelerated but flexible timescale. The server went online in the beginning of September, , and began public player recruitment in the middle of that month.

Since then, I have half-followed the story as best I could from the outside, but I have never had the opportunity to really experience FFXI. I got out of the Army in , and focused my life on my family and my studies as a Game Design major at my local university. The pandemic prevented me from attending class for the spring and fall semesters, and my children are now a little older, so, when I saw an advertisement for FFFXI, I decided to give it a shot.

What I found when I logged on was a mishmash of systems and storylines overlaid on each other and a generally empty world below the level cap. In 2 months of playing on retail, I was in a party with another player for a total of an hour. This was not the game that I had expected to return to. After that disheartening experience, I began to think to myself about how successful progression servers had been run on other games, most notably WoW classic and Everquest, though many other MMOs have had them as well.

I started exploring the private server scene, and found that the servers generally fell into two categories, level 99 servers with everything handed to the players in order to live out power fantasies, and level 75 servers that try to replicate the experience of approximately , and cater to a hardcore, old-school audience. Neither of those really attracted me, so I began researching and setting up Syldra. The concept of a progression server is not a new one, EverQuest progression servers and World of Warcraft Classic are the most notable commercial examples, however several other MMOs have done similar servers.

In essence, the goal is to present the evolution of an MMO over the course of its expansions in order for new and returning players to experience the story lines and the game play experience as it was when the content was initially released. In addition, they tend to have smaller player bases, which encourages cooperation and community. No idea what job I want to actually play until PUP works properly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with private servers if you ask me.

Especially ones that either retroact the current game back to a more enjoyable time in the game's history. Or if say the game is modified to a certain degree to add content that was not in the game previously. Say, if the mod dev gave us the ability to move faster or fly on the chocobos after a certain point.

If people wanted to start servers of their own, as long as they aren't taking money or charging for it then theres no reason why it should be wrong. I can honestly say I've been enjoying my experience on Nasomi more than I have on the retail version I played back in the day. That's because of all the work around that hes put into it. Being able to check my character's inventory and mog boxes outside of the game.

As well as see if something I put on the AH has sold or not. And making all AHs linked together instead of separate. I cant think of any reason as to why making them separate AHs was a good idea, other than large server pop. All of these things has made the game more enjoyable in my opinion. The game still isn't any less difficult either.

So to say it's wrong, is basically saying that game modding is wrong. Modder's dont ask for money for their modifications because the game they mod is not theirs so they cant legally charge you. Otherwise I'm sure they would. But you use their modifications because you're curious about them, or maybe they fix an issue the developers cant seem to fix themselves or WONT fix. Modding brings players back to the game after being away for awhile or keeps them playing it continuously.

Look at Skyrim, I know it's not online but same principle. And if people want something like Nasomi and the company's devs wont or cant do it, then what's so wrong with a guy spending money out of his own pocket to run his own version and sever of a 17 year old online game eh?

That's my 2 cents anyway. Page 3 of 6. Go to page Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next. Previous topic Next topic. Maybe he should try it. Hate isnt the answer!
